What is oculoplasty (oculoplastic surgery)?

Oculoplasty, or oculoplastic surgery (OPC), is actually a highly specialized subfield of ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery that addresses the eyelids, eyebrows, eyeball, tear ducts, and surrounding facial areas as a whole. As the name suggests, it encompasses both aesthetic procedures (such as rejuvenating or reconstructing the eye and related structures) and medically necessary reconstruction procedures (correcting structures damaged due to disease).

Most OPC procedures are performed on an outpatient basis. The eyelid is the thinnest skin area on the body and is a special area. Eyelids have very important functions. These include:

  • It moisturizes the eye surface.
  • The cornea, the transparent layer of the eye that is free of blood vessels, receives oxygen.
  • It cleans the surface of the eye,
  • It protects the eyes from light.
  • It protects the eye against trauma.
  • It allows the eyes to rest during sleep and prevents them from drying out.
  • Expression in the eyes gives meaning to the face.

For these reasons, every procedure in this area should be handled meticulously by experienced OPC specialists. Our primary priority is to protect the function and health of your eye. The OPC specialist selects and performs the most appropriate surgical method, tailored to your individual needs, with great care, preserving the eye’s surface, the function of your eyelids, and your facial expression. In surgical procedures of the eye and surrounding area, it is important to prevent the eye from remaining open, to avoid tissue damage, to preserve the eye’s functions, to achieve cosmetic improvement, and to correct existing problems (reconstruction). Therefore, it is essential to choose OPC specialists who are familiar with the anatomy of the region and have experience in the field.

OPC operations;

  • Chalazion
  • Eye tissue growth
  • Blepharoplasty (upper eyelid blepharoplasty, lower eyelid blepharoplasty, quadruple eyelid blepharoplasty)
  • Lower eyelid bags (lower eyelid blepharoplasty, quadriceps blepharoplasty)
  • Upper eyelid drooping (ptosis)
  • Inward turning of the eyelids = Entropion (upper eyelid entropion, lower eyelid entropion)
  • Outward turning of the eyelids = Ectropion (lower eyelid ectropion)
  • Floppy eyelid syndrome
  • Conditions Related to Thyroid Disease
  • Tear Ducts (Treatment of tear duct blockage)
  • Eyelid Injuries
  • Eyelid Retraction
  • Removal of the blind and painful eye and creation of a prosthetic eye.
  • Eyelash Problems
  • Facial Paralysis
  • Eyelid tumor treatments
  • Botox, mesotherapy, filler applications

One of the most common OPC procedures is blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery. This procedure reduces the sagging appearance that comes with age by removing excess skin from the eyelid. Herniated fatty tissue can be removed or repositioned, eyelid drooping can be treated in the same session, and eyebrow lift can be added to this surgery if there is eyebrow drooping.

A “PERSONALIZED” treatment plan, tailored to each patient’s unique characteristics and eye structure, should be decided upon in detail with the patient. As an ophthalmologist who has received oculoplasty surgical training, trained many colleagues in this field during and after their specialization, and has extensive case experience in OPC (Optical Coherence Perfusion), my primary priority is to treat the eye and its surroundings as a whole, protecting the function and health of the eye.

Our clinic holds SB Aesthetic and Cosmetic Applications Certification and oculoplastic surgery expertise to provide a holistic approach to safe, ethical, and evidence-based eye and periorbital procedures. We offer personalized treatment approaches carefully assessed for each patient’s needs and tailored to their individual eye structure, including surgical procedures such as upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasty, ptosis repair, brow lift, inward and outward eyelash correction, eyelid correction, and tear duct obstruction (DSR) surgery, as well as complementary non-surgical treatments like Botox, mesotherapy, and fillers. *The content of this page is for informational purposes only.
