Eyelid ectropion, or turning the eyelid outwards, mostly occurs as a result of aging. It can also develop after lower eyelid surgery, due to facial paralysis (paralysis of the 7th cranial nerve that closes the eyelid), after injury, or due to allergies from long-term use of various eye drops. It can cause watery eyes, redness, and infection. If treatment is delayed, it can lead to irreversible secondary changes in the lower eyelid, including narrowing and closure of the tear duct opening.

Treatment is directed at the cause. Surgical treatment is usually required using the appropriate method .
