What is Computerized Visual Field?

Computerized visual field testing is a device that measures the area we can see around us when we focus directly on a fixed point . It examines both central and peripheral vision. It is an important diagnostic method, particularly in the diagnosis of eye-related diseases such as glaucoma and retinal diseases, as well as central nervous system disorders. Visual field testing is a subjective test; that is, the test is interpreted based on the patient’s answers. Therefore, the test should be explained to the patient very well and performed in a comfortable environment. Dry eye is a common condition in elderly patients and those using multiple eye drops. Patients should be examined for dry eye before the procedure and provided with necessary artificial tear support.

How is a visual field test administered?

During a visual field test, no eye drops are applied, and the eye is not touched. The test is performed separately for each eye. While one eye is being tested, the other eye is covered. The test duration can range from 10 to 20 minutes for each eye, depending on the specific test being performed.

For patients over 40, the test is continued with reading glasses.

The test requires a dark and quiet room. After the patient places their chin and forehead on the device, they are given a button to press whenever they see a light. The patient presses this button each time they see a light flashing in the surrounding area while looking at a fixed point on the device.

Patients should be reminded to blink occasionally during the test.

Visual field testing should be performed before applying pupil-dilating drops. The pupil should be larger than 2.5mm and centered within the spectacle lens.

What is the importance of a visual field test?

This method makes it possible to identify various problems occurring in the visual pathways of the eye (from the optic nerve to the occipital lobe of the brain) and different types of visual field loss.

Our clinic is equipped with the modern “ZEISS Humphrey Field Analyzer” computerized visual field testing device.
