In patients who have lost a sight in one eye or whose eye has shrunk due to various reasons (trauma, infection, complications from eye surgery, etc.), the upper eyelid droops, the eye shrinks like a deflated balloon, and redness and pain often accompany the condition. If one eye has been severely damaged due to trauma and has lost its vision, in order to reduce the risk of affecting the other eye and losing vision, the non-seeing and painful eye is removed and a mobile eye prosthesis is implanted to ensure aesthetic symmetry with the other eye.

In these cases, tissues from the existing, painful, and blind eye are used in a mobile prosthetic surgery to create a cosmetically similar, mobile eye prosthesis. This surgery is performed under general anesthesia. An implant (like a round ball) is placed in the eye to bring it back to a size close to its original size, similar to a deflated balloon. In this surgery, called evisceration, the outer wall and muscles of the eye are usually preserved and covered like a blanket over the implant. Approximately one month after the implant is placed, a prosthesis is placed in front of it to make it resemble the other eye.

In a surgical procedure called enucleation, the outer wall (periphery) of the eye is also removed, and an implant is placed in the eye socket using the eye muscles. This surgical procedure is generally used in the treatment of intraocular tumors. Approximately one month after the implant is placed, a prosthesis is placed in front of it.

After these surgeries, you and your doctor will need to decide together when and how you can return to work. While a very short time is sufficient for working from home, our patients generally prefer to return to the office after the prosthesis is fitted. Rest during this recovery period is important for wound healing.
