Tear Duct Injuries
Tear duct injury often occurs in conjunction with eyelid injury. It is crucial that these types of injuries are repaired as soon as possible. If treatment is delayed, permanent narrowing or complete blockage of the tear ducts can occur, resulting in persistent tearing and discharge.
Treatment
In cases of tear duct injuries, if there is also accompanying eyelid injury, both the eyelids and the injured ends of the ductal system are located and repaired. To prevent re-narrowing and blockage, a suitable silicone tube is placed inside these ducts. After complete healing, this silicone tube can usually be easily removed in an outpatient setting within 8-12 weeks.
Locating the injured ends of the canal system in tear duct injuries requires attention, care, experience, and knowledge. An ophthalmologist with knowledge and experience in oculoplastic surgery should be consulted for tear duct and eyelid injuries.
